Abstract

The article evaluates the research into the life and works of the first East Slavic printer Francysk Skaryna, carried out by Uładzimir Kalesnik, professor at the University of Brest and one of the most gifted Belarusian literary critics of the second half of the 20th century. Kalesnik, in his article "Постаць Скарыны", which opens his book "Тварэнне легенды. Літаратурныя партрэты і нарысы", considers why the figure of the first translator of the Bible into the Old Belarusian language had been overlooked by literary scholars for such a long time. He considers it unfair to include Skaryna in the group of people representing the interests of the clergy and ignoring his moral and ethical contribution to the development of society. Kalesnik recognizes Skaryna’s views on the role of women in the life of the state as progressive ones. In addition, the famous translator from Połock is shown as a devoted patriot of the Belarussian land, who considered his native language equal to other European languages and appropriate as a medium for preaching the Holy Scripture.
