Abstract
The article examines a number of important issues which distinguish the spiritual potential of the artistic legacy of Francysk Skaryna, a great East Slavonic Belarusian printer, a proponent of education, a writer and an outstanding thinker of the early Belarussian Renaissance period.
In his extensive spiritual pursuit, based on the native Cyrillo-Methodian tradition, Skaryna prolifically developed the achievements of the Western European culture of the Renaissance. At the core of Skaryna’s philosophical-ethical, socio-political, aesthetic, as well as juridical views lies the concept of life as a gift of God. In the present article, a special attention is paid to his humanistic understanding of the work of art, consciously implemented by him in his printing practice and remaining still relevant. It is emphasized that the entire collection of original prefaces-afterwords by Skaryna shows the patristic tradition in the translation of the Bible, respecting Orthodox dogmas, which, in turn, evidently disproves the recently propagated view of him as an activist of the Reformation. It is also emphasized that he stands at the
beginning of the Belarussian national-patriotic tradition, having given his people the Bible in the translation into the Belarussian language.
