Around the Sejny Poems by Tomas Venclova

Abstract

The author of this article analyzes Tomas Venclova’s collection, Sejny Poems, focusing in particular on two poems doubly inspired by Sejny: The Junction (Styk) and Song of the Borderland (Pieśń pogranicza). The Junction refers to the triple geographic, historical, and cultural intersection where the borders of Lithuania, Poland, and former East Prussia converge. It combines childhood memories with historical realities and an artistic affinity with the work of Stasys Eidrigevicius, to whom the poem is dedicated. Song of the Borderland focuses on describing the dynamic nature of the Sejny region, juxtaposing it with the transience of the human condition.
 The author of this article compares both poems, identifying their common features and revealing the potential ambiguity of the concept of borderland as understood by Venclova.
