Abstract

The article honours the 500th anniversary of the translation of the Bible into Ruthenian, done by Francysk Skaryna (1490 – 1540), born in Połock, and then living in Vilnius, Cracow, Prague, and Italy. The author of the article muses upon the scarcity of documents about Skaryna in Polish nineteenth-century literature, analyzing two notes written in Polish in the first half of the 19th century. The first one locates Skaryna in the context of Russian imperial literature, the historical overview of which, written by Paweł Grecz (1787–1867), was published in 1823 in Warsaw in the translation of Samuel Bogumił Linde (1771–1847). Linde, by the way, corrects the false information that Skaryna printed his books in “Prague near Warsaw”. The second note comes from a study by Mikołaj Michalewicz (1792–1846), a professor at the University of Lvov, who places Skaryna in a Slavic, not merely Russian, context.
