Abstract

The purpose of this article is to characterize the Skaryna era in Czech literature and culture. The author gives a panorama of social and cultural developments of the Czech lands in the period under consideration, traces the development of humanism in the Czech Republic, highlights those phenomena in Czech literature and culture that are close to Skorin’s literary and publishing pursuits, and outlines the level of literary development in the Czech lands. A particular attention is paid to the so-called Prague period of life and activities of Francysk Skaryna. Then Skaryna the author of the article discusses a circle of people whose endeavors were close to Skaryna’s: Daniel Adam from Weslavavin, a famous Czech publisher, translator, writer, and author of forewords; Jan Blagoslav, the author of an article about of the Czechs’ national character; and Victorin Kornel from Vsegrd. Finally, a history of translations of the Bible into the Czech language and its various editions in the 14th-16th centuries are considered in detail.
