Abstract

"Wanderings of an Artist among the Indians of North America" (1859) is an exquisite compilation of literary and artistic works. The book presents two extraordinary expeditions into remote areas of wild Canada by the painter Paul Kane. His journey documents life, traditions, habits and customs of North American Indian tribes, inhabiting distant regions untouched by Western civilization. The paintings and descriptions form an evocative exhibition of the artist’s achievements. In my review, I try to evaluate Kane’s artistic output, the travel’s background and its impact on the Canadian heritage of native peoples.
