Abstract

In the interwar period, Polish-Lithuanian relations were tense for political reasons. This had a negative impact on mutual cultural contacts. Despite restrictions, information about the development of culture within independent Lithuania could reach readers of the Polish press. An example is an extensive sketch of Władysław Burkath (1892–1967) entitled "The characteristics of Lithuanian culture (an attempt at synthesis)", which was on purpose published in 1936 in “Marchołt”, a magazine devoted to literature and culture. Presented by Burkath – a pianist, composer, music ethnographer, publicist and sympathizer of the Baltic countries – an image of various personalities and cultural events in the Republic of Lithuania established after 1918 is the subject of interest of the article. Burkath’s friendly view of dynamic cultural changes in the neighboring country and the impressive work of Lithuanians in the establishing of the cultural foundations of their national identity, was part of the ideological and programmatic profile of “Marchołt”. The article is a reminder of the forgotten voice of the journalist from the interwar “Marchołt” on the improvement of Polish-Lithuanian relations in the field of culture important for both sides.
