Abstract

The text reveals the immense significance of the children’s picture book in the history of literature and editorial art over centuries. The vector of the study has been aimed at the Swedish picture book from the turn of the 20th century. Example of esteemed artists contributing to such works (Ottilia Adelborg, Elsa Beskow) indicate the excellence of the skill in making illustrations, originality and distinctiveness of the texts, and the amazing combinations of words and pictures. A philosophical context supplements the valuable Swedish book, namely the philosophy of upbringing of the renowned Swedish writer, teacher, humanist - savant of the turn of the 20th century - Ellen Key. On this example the author has presented how the inventions of paper engineering, content and semantic matter of the picture books converge with primary categories and universals of Key’s philosophy.
