Abstract

The article concerns the life and career of Gabriel Naudé (1600–1653), who worked as a librarian for the Henri II de Mesmes, cardinals Guido di Bagni, Richelieu and Mazarini. For the latter Naudé had created a great library from scratch, one that became the foundation of the
current library of Institute de France. The article also presents the vision of a perfect library Naudé put down in 1627, in his work titled Advis pour dresser une bibliothèque, which he implemented for Mazzarini in the 40s of the 17th century. Said work, a first practical guide to
establishing a library, is currently an undisputable classic.
