Abstract

This presentation tackled the issue of shaping reading competence among youth through cooperation of Polish teachers and employees of the school libraries. Author’s reflections concentrate on studies made on the students of I Społeczne Liceum Ogólnokształcące i Społeczne Gimnazjum nr 8 (Community Secondary School of General Education and Community Middle School no. 8) in Białystok. Results of those observations allowed for formulating a list of publications that were the basis of the Extra-curricular reading books project. The article presents grounds and goals of this project and many other activities carried out jointly with the school library, at and outside of Polish classes (eg. A Day of The National Poet, Winged Words, celebrations, meetings with writers, meetings of the Book Discussion Club and Film Discussion Club (Book-to-Film Adaptations) and others). Their goals were : 1) to instil a love for reading; 2) to accustom students to participating in culture; 3) to solidly prepare students for basic and advance levels of their matriculation exam. These activities does not concern only books that are compulsory to read at school. Their purpose is also to raise their interest in modern literature and shape an attitude of an active and conscious readers of literary texts.
