Abstract

The article discusses the life, activities and works of Łukasz Górnicki, a humanist and a political thinker. Time covered up all the traces of him, except for his works. Among its most precious resources, the Podlachian Library holds a collection of 141 old prints. Issues of Łukasz Gródnicki’s works, a man bonded with Podlasie and a patron to the Library, deserve the utmost attention. This distinguished 16th century humanist, a comprehensively educated writer and a connoisseur of Polish language, has been the first to formulate a role model of a Pole in Polish literature. Podlachian Library holds a few dozen various works of Łukasz Górnicki. The most precious are, among others: four old prints from the 17th and 18th century kept in the Special Resources Department, eight issues from the 19th century, four from the early twentieth century and four from the interwar period. An additional curiosity is a copy of Polish Courtier in Lithuanian issued in Vilnius in 2009. Publishers of Górnicki’s works also deserve attention, like Andrzej Piotrkowczyk, owner of a technically advanced printing works. For the needs of this article, the oldest of Library’s works of Łukasz Górnicki were presented. An annex to the article lists all Łukasz Górnicki’s works held by the Podlachian Library.
