Abstract
The article presents a poem by Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński written on the eve of the election of Pope Pius XII and the outbreak of World War II as a prophecy – prediction of the election of Karol Wojtyła as Pope and his entrustment to Mary. He is portrayed against the background of prophetic traditions in the Polish literature, in the context of the tradition of sacred lyric poetry and poems devoted to papal themes, including those written by Maciej Sarbiewski. The work is also placed among Gałczyński’s numerous works containing prayer elements and the Marian content. The author claims that, while Gałczyński’s religiousness may be problematic – it is ambiguous, subject to the laws of stylisation, grotesque, literary allusion, still, Marian dimensions in the poetry of the author of "Modlitwy za pomyślny wybór papieża" ["Prayer for the Successful Election of the Pope"] are always subject to the rules of confessional lyricism and are expressed in high style. They are strongly connected in Gałczyński’s work with his mother and wife as well as two dimensions of Marian devotion, present in Catholicism and Orthodoxy. The text draws attention to a strong presence of the cult of the Black Madonna of Częstochowa in Gałczyński’s work, as well as to the hitherto unknown acathistic theme in his poems (Akathist – Orthodox hymn to St. Mary, being a prayer for peace).
