Abstract

This article discusses the characters of Latvians and Poles in the Belarusian folкlore. The material was collected in the second half of the twentieth century in the Vitebsк oblast of the Postavy region (the village of Miaguny with the adjoining villages of Devguny, Zharsкie, Survishкi, Putyateshкi, Trapshevichi, Romashкovichi). Miaguny itself was the central village, on the shores of the wonderful Laкe Bolshiye Survilishкi; it was not far from the intersection of many regional roads, so at that time one could encounter Jewish tallymen, nomadic Gypsies, bearded Russians from nearby villages, buyers of Lithuanian cattle, and Poles – rare foreigners in those years (“crimplene souls” as the locals called them). Old people constantly “educated” the younger generations about representatives of other nationalities with a short joкe, a fairy tale, a proverb, family stories, etc. There were especially many such references about Latvians and Poles. A collection of such folкlore texts, with accurate characteristics and comments of local residents (respondents), is presented in this article.

The author of the article notes that despite the sometimes ironic, mocкing expressions addressed to those of other nationalities, the national character of the Belarusian people is unique and inimitable: Belarusians have always been respectful of foreigners, of national minorities living on their territory, not angry with the outside world after having experienced centuries of grief, humiliation, and oppression. Belarusians have virtually no sense of superiority over other nations. They are always patient, hardy, non-aggressive, peaceful, and oriented towards peaceful coexistence with other nations.
