Abstract

In12th – 17thcenturies four types of view of the East were formed inBelarusian literature. Imagination about the East in the Belarusian literature of 12th-17th centuries was formed on the idea that morality is directly dependent on country’s location and can be represented as follows: 1) East – sacred land for the Christian, the land of the Gospel events, the Holy Land, which is temporarily in the hands of the infidels – from the 12th century; 2) in fact the Middle East, Southwest Asia and North Africa – from the 12th century; 3) Porta (Asia Minor) – from the late 16th century; 4) MoscowState– from the late 16th century. In all four cases, the idea of the East was closely associated with the military aggression: all that counteracted or resisted Western Christianity, was seen as a manifestation of Asian, Oriental lifestyle. Turkish aggression in Europe was seen as God’s punishment for the lack of Christian unity. When the Moscow State became stronger, it was also seen as part of the East because of its despotism, domination Tatar customs and nonEuropean cultures. Accordingly, the authors often write not about how it really was, but how it might be in their imagination.
