Abstract
The author looks critically at Zygmunt Gloger’s “Life in the Manor”, published in 1889 in Warsaw newspaper Kłosy. In generic terms, the text crossbreeds a memoir, novella, vignette, and newspaper article. Gloger tells the story of an abandoned Gipsy child, who one day is tracked down by biological mother and has to renounce the affluent life in a manor in Podlasie. As it is argued, Gloger managed to produce a modest account, which is free from cheap, sentimental rhetoric, and which exemplifies the tragic dimension of human fate.
