Abstract

The article examines Zygmunt Gloger’s way of thinking about Masuria and Ełk. The writings that are subject to examination come from Gloger’s articles written from 1863 to 1876, and later included in the first volume of his Miscellaneous Writings. As it is argued, by using the term “Masurians”, Gloger refers to the Poles that systematically colonized river valleys in the area, and, therefore, for him the range of their colonization constitutes the borders of “Polishness”. Moreover, Gloger identifies Masuria with the southern parts of the Duchy of Prussia and with Mazovian ethnicity. By doing so, Gloger’s understanding of the term “Masuria” overlaps (at least partly) with his contemporary German scholars, for example Friedrich Krost.
