Abstract

The article presents Zygmunt Gloger - Polish ethnographer, archeologist, and writer from Podlasie - through the prism of the category of province. Province is here understood as the potential source of the inferiority complex, as well as an important element of identity, which can be easily made into an asset. Zygmunt Gloger’s works illustrate such a double perspective on his native land. The author of the article analyses Gloger’s views on social, political and cultural problems, emphasizing the fact that the nineteenth-century ethnographer would always look for solutions that could be found in his closest, provincial surroundings.
