Abstract

The author of the article sketches a brief (a year-and-a-half long) history of the Brotherhood of Saints Cyril and Methodius, which operated in Kiev from 1846 to 1847. The Brotherhood was set up in Kiev by students who drew upon Christian dogmas and principles with the aim of spiritually renewing the society. Moreover, it propagated the idea of uniting all Slavic nations. Even though the activities of the Brotherhood were brought to a sudden end by Russian repressive measures, its existence was and still is inextricably tied with the history of Ukrainian national identity. Resorting to post-colonial concepts and ideas, the author of the article emphasizes the uniqueness of the Brotherhood, especially when it is examined against the backdrop of earlier Ukrainian tendencies to imitate Russian culture.
