Abstract
The author of the article proposes a new reading of Stefan Żeromski’s drama The Rose. Originally, the text was an attempt to diagnose Polish society after the
revolution of 1905, and - formally - it resembled major Polish romantic dramas. Taking this context into account, the author of the article looks at Żeromski’s
drama through the prisms of both romantic transcendental poetry and twentiethcentury avant-garde theatre. The key to the interpretation of The Rose turns out to be the recognition of its being a drama that records a superindividual, total experience.
