Abstract
The author focuses on the problem of women’s emancipation, significantly present in both Ukrainian and Polish literatures, in the second half of the nineteenthcentury. The article synthesizes and sums up the process of gaining self-awareness by female writers of the epoch, which later on was followed by their political and social demands. The author also shows the male point of view on the emancipation issues, and he demonstrates how the discussion concerning the problem developed in Ukraine, the Kingdom of Poland, Austria-Hungary, and in some parts of the Russian Empire.
