Abstract

The article shows archival documents from the period 1945-1954 related to the official policy assumed by so-called selecting committees of public libraries towards Maria Rodziewiczowna’s oeuvre. Rodziewiczowna’s literature was closely connected with the tradition of gentry and folk culture in the Eastern Borderlands. After WWII, when the area was annexed by the Soviet Union, the writer’s books - because of their subject matter - came to be considered as ideologically pernicious: nationalistic, chauvinistic, anti-Soviet, anti-revolutionary, and even fascist or nihilistic. After such an assessment, more than half of the writer’s oeuvre was ordered to be withdrawn from libraries.
Drawing on readers’ surveys organized in the 1940s, 1970s and 1990s, the article also presents general interest in Rodziewiczowna’s books. On the basis of the statistical yearbook “Ruch Wydawniczy w Liczbach”, it gives exact figures concerning the editions of the writer’s books in post-war Poland.
