Abstract

The article touches on the topic of the Borderlands melancholy in the memories of memories: Pożoga Zofia Kossak-Szczucka and Burza od Wschodu by Maria Dunin-Kozicka. The melancholy that appears after the loss of family possessions is analyzed. The process of dealing with loss is long and does not always end successfully. In their stories, Kossak-Szczucka and Dunin-Kozicka present traumatic historical events that they experienced during the socio-political upheaval that took place in the Borderland at the beginning of the 20th century. Writing down their experiences, they create documentation of the whole spectrum of feelings experienced. The melancholy they fall into makes them constantly think back to happy times. Writing down memories becomes an act of relief and, getting used to the harms suffered, but it does not lead to complete reconciliation with the loss suffered.
