Abstract

Lord Byron's Cain in the reception of Polish Romantics was sometimes overshadowed by other works of the English aristocrat: poetic novels, Manfred and Don Juan. The aim of this article is to indicate possible connections between Cain and Juliusz Słowacki's Kordian and Zygmunt Krasiński's Irydion. The basis for such a juxtaposition is the presence of the figure of the devil in each of these works – Lucifer, Satan, Mephistopheles and Masynissa, respectively. The analysis of satanic themes, particularly the relationship between humans and demons, the strategy of temptation, the role of rationalism, and images of God, based on close reading and the use of the English-language version of Byron's drama, points to the very high probability that Polish authors played an intertextual game with Byron's work – albeit one conducted at a time when both were making their first attempts to free themselves from the spell of Byronism, which largely shaped Polish Romanticism in its early phase.
