Abstract

The article presents artistic output and biography of the British illustrator and author Anthony Browne. The analysis is focused specifically of visual citations and references to classic paintings included in Browne’s picturebooks. Browne’s output is discussed within the context of postmodern picturebook theory (as presented by Michelle Anstey). In the course of analysis there were indicated both types of intertextual references and their sources. The article attempts to describe and interpret roles and meanings of intertextual references in the whole message brought by the discussed Browne’s titles.
