Abstract

The first fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen were published in 1837, so at the beginning of the Victorian era. The Victorian stereotype of the woman was based on two ideologies: the Doctrine of the Two Realms
and the Cult of True Femininity. Women were judged for the four main virtues, namely − devotion, chastity, submission and domination. It is worth noting that during this period, the religious aspect was very important, as evidenced by various references to Christianity, including in fairy tales: 'She Was Good For Nothing', 'The Jewish Maiden'. The model of heroes’s creation was also influenced by the assumptions of the Romantic era, such as unrequired love, longing and idealization of a woman, what shows in his works. In Andersen’s creativeness, therefore, one can find elements of an outlined femininity’s model, which is best presented in the analysis choosing of his texts.
