Abstract
The authors of the text analyze the novel Siostry [Sisters] by Barbara Toporska, focusing on the innovative narrative, rhetorical, and structural solutions that shape the unique form of the work. Special attention is given to the complex relationships between the protagonists, particularly the sisterly bonds marked by tensions of love and hatred. This motif reveals both the desire for closeness and separation from the other person. Toporska departs from traditional realism, choosing an episodic form in which different narrative perspectives and threads intertwine, creating a multi-layered story.
The text also considers the role of objects, which serve as carriers of emotions and symbolism, as well as helping to build causal relationships between characters. An example of this is the character of Krzyś, treated on a metalevel, whose role in the novel has a deeper symbolic meaning. His presence helps to reveal the suffering of war and introduces metatextual elements, broadening the interpretative dimension of the book.
The structure of Toporska’s work reveals the mechanisms of illusions created by the characters, relating not only to reality but also to their inner world. The analyzed interview from Gwiazda Polarna [The Pole Star] introduces a gap between the authorial narrative and the story of the characters, complicating these relationships. The interview turns out to be not only a metatextual game but also a manifestation of a formal and epistemological experiment. Toporska creates a textual figure, inviting the reader into the world of fiction, further strengthening the divide between author and character.
Furthermore, in Siostry [Sisters], Toporska addresses the theme of chance as a key element of life. Many events are considered by her to be the result of chance, reflecting the way the characters’ fates are shaped by unpredictable circumstances, especially in the context of war.
The scholars also emphasize the rhetorical nature of the novel, particularly in the dialogues, which serve both narrative and commentative functions. These techniques give the novel an open structure, allowing for diverse emotional and symbolic interpretations.
