Herder spent several years of his youth (December 1764 – May 1769) in Riga, and it was that time and that city that made him the Herder who we know from numerous articles and monographs devoted to him and his philosophy. However, there are few authors who would focus on the circumstances that made up this process and led to the “liberation of soul” of the philosopher. This article presents only one of probably many factors, but of extreme significance – the dramatic situation of the Latvian peasants, which Herder, as well as his contemporary J.G. Eisen, among others, were aware of, and which they attempted to publicise and improve in extremely different ways. Herder focused his attention on a folk song which, as time passed by and mainly thanks to his attitude and efforts, would become something more than the soul of a tormented people, whose voice the author of Głosy ludów w pieśniach [Voices of the Peoples in the Songs] heard and let others know.
ER -
