The Contrast Between the City and the Small Town (Based on the Novella "Rupiecie") JF - Bibliotekarz Podlaski JA - bp VL - 57 IS - 4 SE - Varia – literary and cultural studies DO - 10.36770/bp.756 UR - https://bibliotekarzpodlaski.pl/index.php/bp/article/view/756 SP - 311-331 AB -
Maria Rodziewiczówna (1864–1944), a landowner-writer with strong ties to Polesie and Warsaw, managed the Hruszowa estate on her own for many years, was a social activist and prolific writer. She quickly gained recognition and popularity among readers, although literary critics have differed in their opinions about her work, and she is rather overlooked in academic research today. Yet, her novels and novellas, among others, are an interesting testimony to the period of her lifetime. Using the selected example of the novella Rupiecie from the collection under
the same title (1908), the article shows how Rodziewiczówna depicts Polesie, its landscapes, people: peasants, workers, landowners, representatives of various
religions and faiths and nations. The contrast between the world of Warsaw and the world of the small town of Kodymno is clearly shown in the novella.
ER -
