Abstract

The present article analyzes a sample of texts on the status of the Polish language in Latvia that appeared in Nasze Życie (Our Life), a weekly published in Riga between 1934 and 1940. The analysis suggests that the editorial team of Nasze Życie considered linguistic correctness and accuracy as one of the highest values of their periodical. This is evidenced by a large number of articles which emphasized the role of high-standard Polish language in preserving the Polish national identity. Much space was dedicated to the problem of linguistic correctness, as well as linguistic variations, in particular the Latvian Polish subdialect. The newspaper also published reader letters, which usually contained reader opinions on particular articles previously published in the periodical. Literary texts (especially contemporary ones) published in the newspaper undoubtedly served to promoted Polish linguistic correctness.
