Abstract

The article shows the relationship between the awareness of St John Paul II manifested in his apostolic activities and the thought of Cyprian Norwid in the context of Romantic cultural geography. Following Norwid, the Pope takes up the task of defining himself by the Slavs through their position on the map of Europe and in relation to their own heritage, the basis of which is Christianity. As a consequence, Karol Wojtyła not only appreciates the origins of the Slavs (by pointing to their relationship with the revealed and incarnate Word), but also reconstructs the religious warp of Polish literature, which began with Bogurodzica and has remained as a foundation reference throughout the country’s history. It seems that the described way of thinking stands in opposition to the contemporary search for the sources of modern Polish literature, represented by R. Nycz or M. P. Markowski, who separate and describe the formation, using the superior category of language.
