Abstract

Tyrtej and Za kulisami [Behind the Scenes] is a dramatic diptych by Cyprian Norwid that has survived only in fragments. As a result, it poses many problems for editors and staging artists as it is difficult to reconstruct the relationship between the two texts and the layout of individual scenes. Zenon Przesmycki was the first to propose an arrangement of the diptych, followed by Wilam Horzyca, who prepared the theatrical premiere of the work. In 1966, the Polish Television Theatre broadcast a production directed by Kazimierz Braun, who also wrote the screenplay. The creator of the play decided (against the proposals of Przesmycki and Horzyca, and in accordance with more recent findings by Juliusz Wiktor Gomulicki) to regard Za kulisami and Tyrtej as a coherent, interweaving whole, and to base the play on the principle of “theatre within the theatre”. His proposal was very well received by audiences and critics alike. The introduction to the play, bringing closer the circumstances of the creation of the diptych, the content of the work and the difficulties in reconstructing its proper form, was delivered by Juliusz Wiktor Gomulicki. The text of this introduction, preserved in the typescript with the author’s corrections and additions, has not yet been published.
