Abstract

The article describes the city of Tartu as a cultural, linguistic and social centre. First of all, the phenomenon of Tartu-Moscow Semiotics School is analysed, focusing on its beginnings and development. The researcher evokes and discusses the events immediately preceding the establishment of the Moscow School of Linguistics, as well as describes the “attachment” to the Tartu School of many philology and culture researchers, headed by Yuri Lotman.
