Abstract

Archival sources are, helpful in biographic research and, are of particular importance for writers in exile, whose biographies, intersected by war and exile, often remain incomplete to this day and need supplementing. The biography of Barbara Toporska (1913–1985) is an example of how important it is to study the biography of a writer when interpreting his/her work, both prose and – or perhaps above all – poetry. The paper presents selected examples of various archives used to explore the writer’s least-known period of life (her childhood and youth), as well as the history of the Toporski family, also important to her.
