Abstract

This article, based on comparative methodology, compares the similarities between the works of Cyprian Kamil Norwid (1821-1883) and Lesia Ukrainka (1871–1913). Among the bridges connecting the works of both artists, there is the primary idea of freedom, based on biblical philosophy, according to which Truth is an area encompassing all spheres of civilisation, an area which can only be entered by the will of Jesus Christ. Man, in turn, is a defender of Truth, not its creator. The author sees a lot of similarities between Norwid and Lesia Ukrainka also at the level of creative technique of both artists. They share, among other things, the belief in the messianic vocation of art, the motif of juxtaposing words and deeds, the imperative to learn the truth as the highest value in the context of time and space, and as a way to find an answer to the cause of the tragic fate that befell Poland and Ukraine. Most important, however, becomes the idea of Slavic Poland, interpreted by Norwid and Lesia Ukrainka alike as a space in which the independence of both nations – Ukrainian and Polish – is possible.
