Abstract

The collocation “unscientific views” in the context of any research seems to have a negative connotation, i.e. it is a set of views lacking a scientific basis. However, on the other hand, the collocation “unscientific views” is related to the popular modern linguistics approach called folk linguistics.

The aim of the article is to discover the views of Latgalians (non-specialists) on the Polish language, its essence and status in the old and modern times. The research sources are Latgalian folk texts, the Modern Latgalian Text Corpus (MuLa), as well as interviews with Latgale residents. Using the theoretical findings and methodology of folk linguistics, the following was determined and compared in the sources above: 1) What views on the essence and status of the Polish language are expressed in folklore, modern Latgalian written texts and in interviews with non-specialists (non-linguists)? 2) What linguistic attitudes to the Polish language are expressed in different Latgalian language texts? In the research process we found that folklore, fiction and opinion journalism texts as well as interview data testify to the long-term presence of the Polish language at the territory of Latgale. Contact with the Polish language occurred and still occurs in the macroenvironment (Catholic church, education, public events, Polish culture societies) as well as the microenvironment (communication with neighbours, relatives of Polish origin). In folklore texts, which reflect an older layer of linguistic contact, the views on the Polish language show a clear opposition “we – they” (social inequality, prestige of the Polish language). Latgalian fiction more clearly reveals the historical context: for Latgalians, the knowledge of the Polish language means a) an opportunity to receive education, to “break away” from the peasant class; b) a threat of losing your identity. Opinion journalism texts and the interviews reveal the functional areas of the Polish language in the modern day as well as the trend of its “disappearance”. The description of the language includes the comparison with other familiar (primarily Slavic) languages as well as the expression of positive, negative, and neutral linguistic attitudes.
