Abstract

The article presents some information concerning the discovery of German-language books belonging to the Mazurian poet’s son, Gustaw Kayka. The books were found during the renovation of Michał Kajka’s house in Ogródek. The copies that survived under the floor were part of the Kajkas’ home library, which was also most likely shared with his neighbours. From an editorial point of view, these items are modest and adequate to the family’s financial possibilities. Predominant among them are the so-called Dreigroschenromane, published en masse mainly by the Philipp Reclam’s publishing house in Leipzig. These are prose works, but one can also find the so-called Sachbücher, i.e. popular literature, which proves that Gustaw Kayka, together with his family and his Mazurian surroundings, had a desire to constantly interact with the written word and thus deepen his knowledge.
