Abstract
The article analyses the translation of Juliusz Słowacki’s "Król-Duch" into German. It was done by Walter Schamschula, a scholar in Slavic studies, born in 1929 in Prague. Although he specialized in Russian, Czech,
and Polish literature, but he is best remembered for his translations. Apart from "Król-Duch", Schamschula rendered into German Słowacki’s "Bieniowski" and Mickiewicz’s "Dziady". While working at the University of California, Berkley, he met (and was influenced by) Czesław Miłosz. In his introduction to "Król-Duch", Schamschula admits to having serious artistic ambitions: “The adherence to the original text in terms of its content and form is, in the end, of lesser importance than the fidelity of a different kind: the translator needs to totally identify with the poet’s world of ideas so as to give the impression that his version might have been written by Słowacki himself had he decided to write Król-Duch directly in German.”
As Libera argues, the greatest asset of the publication is Schamschula’s extensive, often detailed commentary to Słowacki’s long poem.
