Abstract

This article outlines the figures of two poets: Jadwiga Łuszczewska (better known under the artistic pseudonym Deotyma, 1834–1908), a famous improviser at the time, running a literary salon in Warsaw, and Karolina Proniewska (literary pseudonym Praniauskaitė, 1828– 1859), a modest poet from Samogitia, whose development was broken by premature death. Deotyma and Proniewska became a peculiar phenomenon of cultural events of their time. Their work received equivocal assessment, but they were extremely popular in their era, both adored and criticized. Nowadays they have almost fallen into oblivion. The fate of these two women can be an interesting contribution to the research on the condition, role and destiny of a woman-writer in the contemporary society and culture.
