Abstract

The author presents Helena Więckowska, a renowned scholar in two fields: history and library science. The article sketches Więckowska’s youth, the stages of her scholarly development, and her achievements during the interwar period, when library science and book studies entered a completely new phase. When Poland re-gained independence, the development of cultural and educational institutions became of the priorities. During World War II Więckowska continued her educational mission running a private lending room in her flat, and this idea went on until the 1980s.
