Abstract

The author of the article presents Eliza Orzeszkowa in a new light: not as ‘creator’ but as a ‘user’ of literature, and focuses entirely on the writer’s private book collection. The article describes Orzeszkowa’s early passionate interest in arts, her solid literary education, her first favourite books and her debut as an author of fiction. The analysis of Orzeszkowa’s career in the context of her private book collection gives a new picture of her literary achievements and of the epoch that influenced her writings. Among the volumes she collected we find fiction (predominantly) as well as the books released by her own publishing house, commemorative pamphlets and translations.
