Abstract

The article shows Józef Ignacy Kraszewski as an artist who was seriously engaged in all the aspects of his oeuvre’s edition, as a man who was keen on giving a final touch to the product of his pen. In fact, Kraszewski was not only a writer, but a publisher, printer and a skillful illustrator. Illustrations played a vital role in the editorial process that Kraszewski supervised and approved of. Perfectly familiar with the standards prevailing in other countries at the time, Kraszewski tried to implement them in the partitioned Poland, thus contributing to the development of readership among his natives. He did his best to emphasize typically Polish elements in the illustrations of the books that he published, and he encouraged others to follow in his footsteps. He was of the first Polish writers to see the potential hidden in illustrations that accompanied belles-lettres – Michał E. Andriolli’s pictures were unsurpassed examples for him – and saw them as an important means of shaping readers’ imagination.
