Abstract
The paper looks at the popularity of Józef Ignacy Kraszewski’s oeuvre in Poland in the period 1944-2010. The analysis draws on the number of Kraszewski’s publications as documented in the updated national bibliography and in the statistical yearbook “Publications in Numbers”. From the data that can be found there we can see that since WW II Kraszewski’s books have been published 642 times, which makes him second on the national list, just after Henryk Sienkiewicz. The first three decades of the period were the time when Kraszewski was the most frequently republished Polish author. However, the 1990s saw a drop in the number of publications, which was occasioned by the emergence of free publishing market in Poland, and the increasing competition on the part of other Polish and foreign authors. The popularity of Kraszewski’s oeuvre among Polish readers has been demonstrated on the basis of all-Poland reports on readership prepared by different institutions (e.g. The Book and Readership Institute of the National Library). The reports testify to Kraszewski’s oeuvre’s significant popularity – even at the beginning of the 21st century he was among ten most popular (Polish and foreign) writers.
