Abstract

The author of the article presents one of the biggest Bulgarian libraries as an institution that, apart from its basic function, i.e. making collections available to the readers, acts as a patron of the arts and an organizer of cultural activities, and functions as a museum and an art gallery. The development of the library and the process of acquiring its present status are shown against the backdrop of Veliko Tarnovo’s history, its social context and determinants of Bulgarian culture. Considering its sophisticated design and the wall paintings it is decorated with, the library itself is a work of art and a tourists’ attraction. The frescos by Georgij Bogdanov and Ilja Petrov, as well as works of numerous sculptors, painters and architects make the library an exceptionally important site for Bulgarian national culture.
