Abstract

The author begins his argument by reminding the reader of the notion of heterotopia as understood by Michel Foucault. The French philosopher defined heterotopia as anti-space, or such space where reality is turned inside out, contested and endowed with dual meanings. It is often the space where people who are present there have the impression that it can be understood in two radically different ways. Examples of heterotopia can be found in places heavily marked by history and in “sites of trauma”. The author makes his point drawing on two examples: Kostrzyn, a town significantly affected by an old story of the trial and execution of Hans Hermann von Katte, and Obrzyce (in the past known as Obrawalde) with its mental hospital – an institution which now is in running order, but at the time of WW II was the site of executions of patients who had been subject to cruel medical experiments.
