Abstract

The author of the article presents the development of the Orthodox Church monasticism in Grand Duchy of Lithuania, emphasizing the significant influence of the Byzantine culture on this way of shaping human spirituality. The Orthodox monasticism in Lithuania is shown in the context of the Byzantium’s most general influences on the culture of the Slavs. It was from the Slavic countries – from Kievan Rus, in particular – that the monastic tradition was brought to Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In his historical outline and analysis of the process the author shows that Lithuanian monasteries maintained a close rapport with major places on the Orthodox map: Byzantium and Mount Athos. Such close connections turned Lithuanian monasteries into centers of Orthodox culture and religious education.
