Abstract

In her article, Magdalena Gąsowska reviews a book entitled ‘W kręgu sztuki. Wybór gawęd’ [‘In a Circle of Art. A Selection of stories’] (2015) written by Bożena Fabiani – a historian and a poet, a specialist in Baroque, history of Christian Rome, history of art, Old Polish culture, as well as biographies of the most prominent artists. The researcher draws particular attention to Han van Meegeren (1889–1947), a Dutch art dealer and painter, a famous forger of works by Jan Vermeer van Delft (1632–1675). Gąsowska also complements her deliberations with, e.g. references to the biographical work by Frank Wynne, entitled ‘I was Vermeer. The Rise and Fall of the Twentieth Century’s Greatest Forger’ (2007).
