Abstract

The studio explores the Polish-language poetry of Markiyan Shashkevych in the context of the development of Ukrainian Romanticism. The typology of Ukrainian
Romanticism as a Romanticism of the literature of a non-state nation is noted. The
peculiarities of Ukrainian-Polish literary interactions during the period of the literary activities of the „Ruthenian Triad”, which were conditioned by the Alphabet War, are traced.
The Polish-language autobiographical poetry of Markiyan Shashkevych is analyzed. The folk poetics of the sample of love lyrics „A wiesz ty?.. (Do Julii…)” (Do you know?.. [To Julia…]) is noted. Attention is incidentally drawn to the love lyrics of the Romantics Viktor Zabila, Opanas Shpyhotsky, and Mykola Ustiyanovych.
The poem „Moje niebo (Julii…)” (My Sky [To Julia…]) is considered as a synthesis of intimate and civic lyrics. For the lyrical hero, the question of national identity is essential, shaped by the „Ruthenian song”, the strings of the Ukrainian soul, and the „Ruthenian thoughts.” The image of the sky in the work is interpreted as the highest form of grace for the lyrical hero, achieved through reliance on native song. The philosophical issues of the poem resonate with the Ukrainian-language Psalms of Ruslan by Markiyan Shashkevych, particularly the second psalm, in which the notion of the „Ruthenian heart” and „Ruthenian faith” are developed as demonstrations of the strength of Christian beliefs.
