Abstract

The author of the article analyzes Volodymyr Lys’s novels: The Age of Jakiv, Solo for Solomia, and The Virgin of the Mlynyshche from an ecocritical perspective. The writer crafts an engaging portrayal of Volhynia, founded on the appreciation of its peasant civilization, authenticity, and national distinctiveness. Volodymyr Lys’s novels mirror the distinct local characteristics of Volhynia: its captivating and unique nature, as well as the genuine village life encompassing local dialects, intriguing toponyms, archaic customs, and rituals, and so forth. These depictions of human life intertwined with nature are examined within the context of the twentieth century’s global history, marked by revolutions, wars, repressions, and deportations.

The comparison between these two dimensions – the local and the global – infuses the works of this Volhynian writer with a high-stakes dramatic quality, recontextualizing them within the framework of national memory.
