Abstract

In her article entitled “Love in the shadow of death. About the parents of Henryk Elzenberg and their correspondence” Anna Wydrycka particularly follows the fate of two figures significant to Polish 19th-century culture: Henryk Elzenberg (a sworn lawyer, co-owner of “Home Guardian”, journalist in – among others, “Przegląd Tygodniowy” [TN: Weekly Review], “Gazeta Handlowa” [TN: Commercial Paper] – editor, co-founder of Warsaw’s “Niwa”, creator of “Dziennik Łódzki” [TN: Lodz Journal] and translator) and Maria Olędzka Elzenbergowa (owner of the Flower Factory, a talented maker of artificial bouquets, which were in great demand as decorative materials, founder of the first Women’s Reading Room in Warsaw, writer, proofreader and editor of “Dziennik Łódzki”), parents of Henryk Elzenberg, an prolific philosopher. The researcher analyzes the letters they wrote. She also looks at the dramatic fate of their relationship, which culminated in the period of Maria Elzenberg’s cancer and her premature death.
